Who Is Demi Lovato’s Fiancé? All About Jutes

Demi Lovato and Jutes announced their engagement in December 2023

Demi Lovato is getting married!

The singer, who has been publicly dating Jordan “Jutes” Lutes since August 2022, got engaged on Dec. 16, 2023, a rep for Lovato confirmed to PEOPLE.

Lovato (who uses she/they pronouns) and Jutes were first linked after they were photographed holding hands ahead of the release of their eighth studio album Holy Fvck.

In March 2024, the “Confident” singer gave Jutes a sweet shout-out on Instagram in honor of his 32nd birthday. “My angel, I thank the universe everyday that you exist and that I get to marry you someday,” Lovato wrote. “I love you, here’s to another year around the sun together.”

Jutes returned the favor in August 2024 with a birthday shout-out of his own for Lovato on Instagram, writing, “Happy birthday to my whole world. You deserve nothing but happiness and love because that’s what you give to everyone you meet.”

Here’s everything to know about Demi Lovato’s fiancé.

He’s from Canada

Jutes originally hails from Ottawa, Canada. Per a previous interview with Nuance Magazine, he originally studied film and played basketball, before eventually developing a passion for songwriting while living in Toronto.

He’s an independent musician
Jutes was previously signed to Capitol Records but left the label “to pursue his own independent artist goals,” per Nuance Magazine.

“I left because due to Covid mad budgets got cut, and I guess they didn’t want to hold me and not give me the support I needed, which is so blessed of them to do,” he told the publication about his decision to part ways with Capitol Records after two years.

“You hear about labels shelving people or holding them without pushing them so often, and I can’t say how grateful I am that isn’t me,” he added. “I had been wishing I could be indie again for a while just because I love being totally in charge of my own career, so it worked out quite nicely.”

He co-wrote some of Lovato’s songs

Jutes co-wrote Lovato’s tracks “Substance,” “Happy Ending,” and “City of Angels” from their recent album Holy Fvck. “One of my fav songs i’ve ever worked on,” he wrote in an Instagram post alongside a clip of Lovato’s music video.

“When i got asked to pull up and write for this session i remember thinking wtf am i supposed to do in a demi lovato session? only to show up and realize she was making one of the hardest rock projects i’ve ever heard,” he continued. “obviously a crazy milestone for me but beyond that i feel so blessed to be a part of something i’m such a big fan of.”

In addition to co-writing some of Lovato’s songs, it seems he might inspire some love songs as well. In an April 2023 interview with CBS Mornings, the former Disney star spoke about returning to the emo genre for her album Holy Fvck, hinting that her next songs will likely be more upbeat.

“I definitely am in a really good place,” Lovato said. “I don’t know what I’m going to write about on my next album because I’m so happy. It is a really good feeling, but I don’t know what I’m going to do.”

She added: “Definitely a bunch of sappy love songs — for sure.”

He’s been open about his sobriety journey
Like Lovato, Jutes has been candid about his sobriety journey. In July 2022, he marked 100 days of being sober on Twitter. “Learning to cope with my anxiety properly was something i was always too scared to try,” he wrote. “Took a long time to be ready but i’ve never felt better mentally and emotionally. if ur dealing with s— rn that feels never ending just know nothing lasts forever.”

A source told PEOPLE that the pair have bonded over their sobriety journeys. “They joke, laugh, talk about their mutual personal problems, and what they overcame as young people in the music business,” the insider said. “He is in awe of her talent and very supportive.”

He uses his music to cope with his emotions
In his interview with Nuance Magazine, he opened up about his passion for songwriting, calling it his “therapy.” “I really live to write songs,” he told the publication. “It’s how I first started being honest about my emotions and mental health, so my connection to it is very deep-rooted.”

He added that he hopes the music he creates inspires other people going through similar situations. “I’ve got over 300 demos on my phone and those are just the recent ones. So, I figured hey no one can tell me what to do anymore, so why hoard this music to myself. Even if a song helps one person then it has a purpose and will also make me a little cash in the process. I feel free these days and want to stop overthinking so much and just let ’em fly.”

He’s super supportive of Lovato

In addition to sharing heartfelt birthday tributes to the singer, Jutes is constantly praising Lovato’s musical talents on Instagram. After their performance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Jutes posted a clip of them singing, writing, “sheeeesh best voice in the game, by a lot. u killed it rockstar @ddlovato,” before adding, “ps ur f—— hot.”
He thinks Lovato is “gorgeous”
In December 2022, Jutes gave his followers a life update on Instagram. He shared a carousel of images that included a cute mirror selfie with Lovato.

“I’m still alive and my friends and gf are still looking absolutely gorgeous,” Jutes captioned the post.

Meanwhile, Lovato talked about Jutes’ good looks in an episode of the PodcastOne podcast LadyGang. In a clip shared exclusively with PEOPLE, they recalled meeting Jutes while working on their 2022 album HOLY FVCK.

“The way that I met my boyfriend was actually in a session,” they said, explaining that he walked into the studio and she was immediately attracted to him.

“I texted my friends and was like, ‘Oh my God, the hottest guy just walked In. I am so nervous. I don’t know what to do with myself,’ ” they said.

He enjoys skiing
In December 2022, Jutes and Lovato went skiing in the San Gorgonio Wilderness — home to several ski resorts in Southern California. The “Confident” singer shared photos from the winter getaway on Instagram.

He and Lovato were friends before they started dating

During an interview on SiriusXM’s The Morning Mash Up, Lovato revealed that she and Jutes were friends for several months before they started dating.

“We’re so happy,” she said. “He’s my best friend.”

He and Lovato made their red carpet debut in February 2023

On Feb. 4, 2023, the couple made their red carpet debut at Clive Davis’ Pre-Grammy Gala. Lovato wore a black-and-white gown by Rubin Singer, while Jutes looked like the perfect plus-one in a black suit and tie.

“turns out i remember how to tie my own tie,” he captioned a series of images on Instagram, including a snapshot of the pair sharing a smooch on the red carpet.

He and Lovato got engaged in December 2023

Lovato and Jutes got engaged following a “personal and intimate proposal” on Dec. 16, 2023. Afterward, the couple celebrated with their families at an L.A. restaurant.

Jutes popped the question with a custom pear-shaped diamond solitaire engagement ring designed by N.Y.C. luxury jewelry boutique Material Good.
