Lohan was supposed to turn on the lights after offending Kettering during June’s Brexit referendum.
Lindsay Lohan has apologised to the people of Kettering for apparently backtracking on an offer to turn on the town’s Christmas lights.
During the night of the EU Referendum in June, the Mean Girls actress began live-tweeting results from up and down the country as she became engrossed by the UK’s shock decision to vote for Brexit.
When news broke that 61% of voters in the Northamptonshire town had voted to leave the EU, Lohan tweeted hastily: “Sorry, but #KETTERING where are you?”
This prompted local MP Philip Hollobone to defend the town’s honour by pointing out that Kettering is “famous as the home of Weetabix breakfast cereal”. He also asked Lohan if she wished to turn on the town’s Christmas lights this year by way of apology.
Lohan then appeared to accept the offer, tweeting: “Would be happy to light the Christmas tree in #Kettering.”

However, the ceremonial switching-on of the Kettering Christmas lights took place yesterday (November 24) and Lohan failed to attend. Former EastEnders star Cheryl Fergison and West End actress Lucie Downer turned on the lights instead.
Lohan posted an apology message on Twitter, explaining that her “busy schedule” had prevented her from making the trip to Kettering.

In a since-deleted tweet, she also suggested that she could make amends by switching off the town’s Christmas lights instead.
Lohan previously hit the headlines last month (October) when she lost her fingertip in a boating accident.
