A year after Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce debuted their romance, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes explained how the “Karma” singer has been supporting the NFL team.
Taylor Swift doesn’t have to tell Patrick Mahomes she’s a mastermind.
Even so, the “Karma” singer’s romance with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce has had a chain reaction of counter moves for her to assess the equation of the team’s next victory, and the Super Bowl MVP is here for it.
“She’s really interested in football,” Patrick told NFL on NBC Aug. 29. “She asks a lot of great questions. She’s been drawing up plays, so we might have to put one in.”
Given that Taylor has attended 13 Kansas City Chiefs games—including their latest Super Bowl win against the San Francisco 49ers–it’s understandable she’s put herself to work. And she’s even discussed her newfound passion for the game beyond supporting the Grotesquerie star.
“Football is awesome, it turns out,” she told TIME in December. “I’ve been missing out my whole life.”
Indeed, Taylor’s dad Scott Swift is a devout fan of Jason Kelce’s former team the Philadelphia Eagles. And while Taylor has left her own Eagles T-shirt hanging from the door in favor of her guy on the Chiefs, she has no regrets.
As she added to TIME, “I’m just there to support Travis.”
Of course, Taylor isn’t the only supportive one in her relationship.
After all, Travis has flown around the world to support her at various Eras Tour shows, and even got up on stage to support her earlier this summer in London—an idea that was his very own.
“I initially mentioned it to Tay,” he gushed during a July episode of New Heights. “I was like, ‘How funny would it be if I just rolled out on one of the bikes during the 1989 album. That era.’”
He continued, “I’ve seen the show enough, might as well put me to work here.”
Although Travis is a self-proclaimed fanatic of Taylor’s fifth album, she ended up incorporating him into her The Tortured Poets Department set instead.
“She found the perfect part of the show for me to come in,” he gushed. “It was the perfect time for me to go up there and be a ham and have some fun.”
And for her part, Taylor has also emphasized how important support is to her in the couple’s relationship.
“When you say a relationship is public, that means I’m going to see him do what he loves, we’re showing up for each other, other people are there and we don’t care,” she told TIME. “The opposite of that is you have to go to an extreme amount of effort to make sure no one knows that you’re seeing someone. And we’re just proud of each other.”
July 2023: So, Make the Friendship Bracelets
Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s love story began in July 2023, when the singer’s Eras Tour made a stop at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Mo.
As a huge Swiftie, the Kansas City Chiefs tight end caught the show with hopes of giving Taylor a friendship bracelet with his number on it. However, he failed to complete the pass due to her pre-show rituals.
“I was disappointed that she doesn’t talk before or after her shows because she has to save her voice for the 44 songs that she sings,” Travis shared on the July 26 episode of his New Heights podcast. “So, I was a little butt-hurt I didn’t get to hand her one of the bracelets I made for her.”
Summer 2023: This Is Him Trying
After publicly recounting his fumble—a move Taylor would later describe as “metal as hell”—Travis decided to shoot his shot and invite the Grammy winner to watch the Chiefs play at Arrowhead Stadium.
“I threw it out there, I threw the ball in her court,” he shared on The Pat McAfee Show. “I told her, you know, ‘I’ve seen you rock the stage in Arrowhead, you might have to come see me rock the stage in Arrowhead and see which one’s a little more lit.’ So, we’ll see what happens in the near future.”
